Rackspace Sponsored Session: OpenStack Fleet Management: What Rackspace Has Learned

Scaling OpenStack is hard.  Sometimes the challenges come from gaps or issues in the software itself.  Often, however, they stem from the mere fact that growth introduces complexities.  As the number and type of various "nodes" expands, Operators are faced with several challenges around how they are deployed, tracked, interact with each other, are monitored and dealt with when they become problematic.  This is further complicated when a deployment consists of physical servers, virtual instances and containers in the pool of nodes being managed. This talk will focus on Rackspace's approach to fleet management as we have continued to scale.

There is no one-size fits all solution, or one "right" way to do it, but many in the OpenStack Operators community are working to overcome the same obstacles. It's as much (if not more) about philosphy as it is technology.  Choosing how to view various "nodes", how expendable (or not) we'd they should be and the level of care (or not) an Operator would like to have for each are all factors in Fleet Management design.  More importantly, will these same approaches work at 10x the scale?  During this discussion, we'll share how Rackspace is solving for some of these in its Public Cloud Fleet, work that is still ahead and our plans about sharing it all back with the community
